Cheval Noir Range of Wines

Cheval Noir wines are made by the  Mähler-Besse family who knows the terroir in Saint Emilion extremely well and work closely with the best partners there to produce great wines. Present in Saint Emilion since 1937 with the acquisition of Château Cheval Noir, Mähler-Besse consolidated their position in this appellation with the purchase of Château La Couronne in 1992. Cheval Noir Saint Emilion is a blend made from a meticulous selection of lots from our estates and partner winegrowers.

Cheval Noir is one of the oldest Saint-Émilion estates, first mentioned in 1895. Château Cheval Noir, together with Château Palmer, were the first estates purchased by the Mähler-Besse family, both in 1938.

Château Cheval Noir, located not far from the finest Saint-Émilion estates, benefits from the valuable advice of Hubert de Boüard, oenologist and joint-owner of Château Angélus, Premier Grand Cru Classé. He contributes his winemaking knowledge and expertise to Cheval Noir wines in a neighbourly way.

The vines on this 5-hectare estate are mainly Merlot, planted over 50 years ago on siliceous soil with ironpan subsoil.

The legend of Cheval Noir fine wines dates back to the 19th century, in the heart of the Saint-Émilion vineyards.

The Black Prince was a legendary knight who defended Aquitaine – then under English rule – against the Kingdom of France. His extraordinary tale is intertwined with the history of Château Cheval Noir.
